- Alvord Unified School District
- Overview
Alvord and the Community
-
Alvord Unified, with roots in Riverside that date to 1896, has evolved from one rural schoolhouse into a 23-site district that educates almost one-third of the students in Riverside, along with children in parts of Corona and unincorporated Riverside County.
The district’s traditional focus on providing excellent education for rural students continues with a modern twist, as the district now does extensive work with
a diverse student body, including immigrants, English learners, and children from the full range of socioeconomic backgrounds.
AUSD remains a vital part of the larger community – a growing region with increasing opportunities in higher education, business, and industry. The district offers a range of curriculum that transcends the classroom and helps students prepare for college and careers. A few highlights include:
-
The Health Career Academy at La Sierra High School: a trailblazing, decades-long partnership with Kaiser Permanente to introduce students to careers in health care. The curriculum includes a nine-week rotation at the hospital on Magnolia Avenue in Riverside.
-
Project Lead the Way at Hillcrest High School: an advanced program to teach students hands-on, leading-edge engineering and technical skills to prepare them for jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields.
-
International Baccalaureate at Norte Vista High School: an award-winning honors program that has transformed struggling students into high achievers who go on to college. The program includes an international focus that helps give local students a global perspective.
-
Music education at various elementary sites: a partnership with the nonprofit Harmony Project helps develop kids’ auditory and motor skills through music. Research in neuroscience shows that music education enhances young brains and can boost students’ math skills.
Alvord has always recognized education as a great equalizer and stairway to opportunity. The district will continue to teach strong fundamentals and offer a range of specialty and enrichment programs on safe, modern campuses that teach and model AUSD values of courage, inclusiveness, innovation, and integrity.
